The emotions
First homestay experience, second time in Jakarta. Better than expected experience.
The initial homestay feeling was full of apprehension – damn paiseh! Paiseh to be putting up at a total stranger's place. Unwilling to impose, afraid to offend.
The home
Amazing household, double-storey house with a huge aquatic enterprise in its backyard, from black ghosts to arowanas to kois and lobsters. Away from regimental and orderly Singapore, the typical law-abiding Singaporean tends to be overwhelmed by the sorta 'bo zeng hu' systems in our neighbouring countries.
The people
Yani – born 1984, my host with the big brown eyes who, like me, likes mostly things green and Japanese
Daisy – born 1985. Young, jovial, likes pink, laughs easily, fashionable, likes bags and shoes
Razka (Riska) – born 1984, tinier than Sandy! Almost always the last 'man', looks out for us, the visitors
Homestay buddy EM, Sarawak-ian working for AIG. Cordial but not warm, friendly but not helpful.
Daisy commented that I'm 静 (shizuka). Yup, ever the 静な人ね…
The people in Jakarta are more helpful and friendly than the Shanghainese! Even the drivers have more patience.
Daisy scrambled over from the back of the MPV with her just-put-on make-up, new shoes and top from MD just now, and zipped outta the car in less than 5 seconds. That's the last I'll see of her. 一天的缘分。
The city
Jakarta is constantly 'jamming'. Peddlers walking on the roads among the cars trying to make a sale outta the most insignificant and unattractive items. Getting chauffeured around in a Toyota MPV. Just like how I remember Jakarta to be like on my first visit.
Pillion riders with no helmets. Pedestrians standing in the middle of the road island amidst the jam and rain and still eating away. Wah, the perfect display of the daily resilience of the people.
The itinerary
Taman Mini – miniature Indonesia + Dunia Fantasi (DuFun) + shopping at Mangga Dua
Brought a full set of clothing – T-shirt, denim quads and a pair of shoes. A magic ball for MC as well. Stuff not very much cheaper than back home. But the gado-gado is nicer than back in Singapore though. Yummy.
The 2-hour ride home
Heard the 'my-hum' song on radio! Never knew it was an ACTUAL song. Haha.
Almost an hour into the jam and we are still in the Mangga Dua area! Is MD huge or is it just the jam?!
Still in the jam! Or are there MANY MDs in Jakarta?!
在回家的途中下起雨了。有必要执着于那个雨天的回忆吗?
